I live in SW and want to ride to school with my 7yr old. Which route is the best and safest?

DC produces a bike map which is very helpful for planning out bike routes. I can send you a paper copy if you e-mail me with your address at jennifer.hefferan@dc.gov. Or you can refer to the map online on the following website: http://ddot.dc.gov/DC/DDOT/About+DDOT/Maps/Bike+Map+2010+-+Side+2+-+Entire+City+Side+(31+inches+x+24+inches) As a parent, you're the best judge of whether a given route is right for you and your child. If you have the opportunity, take a ride one weekend to test out some possible routes. One route to start with would be to head east on I Street SW. Then take a right on Half Street SE until you get to K Street. Take a left on K Street and continue to 3rd Street. Head left on 3rd and then it's one more left onto South Carolina to reach the school.

If you go in the car you are all stuffy and tired but if you walk you get fresh air and you feel energized.

It's fun cos you can walk with your friends and you don't have to wait till the next day to tell them something

What if it rains when I walk to school?

People have been walking to school in all sorts of weather for years and years. If it rains, grab an umbrella. When I was a kid, I used to like splashing in the puddles as I walked home from school in the rain, although I guess my Mom didn't like that so much.
